"In the Name of God, Do Your Duty"
I always understood the decision to not vote. The late great George Carlin said he stayed home on election day and masturbated, and basically accomplished as much as the people in the voting booths. A strange and graphic comparison, but that was George. Carlin also warned us that the "owners" of this country are a big club...and we ain't in it. There are huge problems with our government, and frankly, though it's not my particular choice, I never criticized those who just walked away from the whole mess.
But this time is different. I just turned 52, and I've never seen a candidate with any legitimate shot at the White House who posed nearly the threat to our standing system of government and the rule of law as does Donald Trump. The whole situation would be really funny if it weren't so ominous.
Trump literally called on Russia to hack Clinton's emails and influence our election. Former CIA Director Leon Panetta called those actions "inconceivable." He also said, "Think about that for a moment. Donald Trump, who wants to be president of the United States, is asking one of our adversaries to engage in hacking or intelligence efforts against the United States to affect our election."
Another former CIA chief, Michael Morell, said this: "In the intelligence business, we would say that Mr. Putin had recruited Mr. Trump as an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation."
Trump holds grudges and vows vengeance when he perceives he's been slighted. He wants SNL off the air because they told some jokes about him. He's gonna sue the New York Times for reporting about the women who have accused Trump of sexual harassment. Hell...he's gonna sue everybody. He tells us that pretty much everything and everyone who doesn't actively support him is "rigged." If he's elected, he says he's gonna throw Hillary in jail, despite the fact she hasn't been convicted of anything. He fear mongers and plays to the very worst elements of our country. Bigotries against race, gender, and religion are his stock-in-trade. He's been endorsed by the KKK and the American Nazi Party, just for starters.
This election goes far beyond Republican vs. Democrat. Trump is a whole different beast altogether, more hideous and disturbing, an immature egomaniac with absolutely zero qualifications to be President. Many conservatives recognize this situation for what it is. Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative commentator George Will wrote, "If Trump wins, the GOP ends as a vehicle for conservatism."
Hopefully once this godforsaken election is over, I'll go back to my old ways and start quoting George Carlin again. But for the moment, the only quote that seems to fit belongs to Harper Lee's iconic Atticus Finch:
Get out to the voting booths tomorrow, folks. "In the name of God, do your duty."
