MAN SELLING ROSES
there's a man selling roses
on a dirty little corner downtown
his business is loveliness
but he wears the darkest frown
and the thorns upon his roses
make no crown

he gives you daisies for a dollar
then he gives you some free advice
he says, You only get one shot boy
To live up to your life
It's more than money
And I ain't gonna tell you twice

The money can't help you
When you're this far down
The judge can't hang you
When you're this far down

then he says, Watch where you're stepping
These woods are full of snakes
There ain't no such thing as angels
And there ain't no lucky breaks
But there's always one decision
You can make

and he swears he thinks he's seen you
someplace sometime before
then he shuffles on down the sidewalk
to the triple X video store
it's hard keeping faith
when the world is such a whore

and the money don't matter
when you're this far down
the judge can't hang you
when you're this far down

there's a man selling roses
on a dirty little corner downtown
he makes his living from your luxuries
and he wears the darkest frown
and the thorns upon his roses
make no crown
